FAQs About Chiropractic Treatment

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is founded on the understanding that the body has a natural and inherent ability to heal itself as long as there is interference in the healing process. A skilled Chiropractor has a a variety of methods to determine where the body is exposed to interference, or what is also referred to a “subluxation.” A subluxation is a misalignment or improper movement of a one or more of the vertebra in the spine. Subluxations can be the source of various pains and can also cause deterioration of the spine which some think is irreversible. Chiropractors have array of techniques at their disposal to correct subluxations. In order for the spine to function properly, and for the body to function optimally, it needs to be free from these interferences.

Could my Headaches be Coming from my Neck?

Yes! Headaches that come from misalignment in the neck are called Cervicogenic. Cervicogenic is Latin for starting (genic) and neck (cervico). These types of headaches can come on due to a number of reasons: from a traumatic injury such as an car accident or a fall; a repetitive action at work that stresses the body; poor posture; and many others causes. Chiropractors examine areas of the neck that are moving incorrectly and by treating these areas of many headaches are completely resolved.

What’s Wrong With Me?

Accurately identifying and understanding the cause of spinal pain and other discomfort typically calls for a thorough examination and consultation with an experienced Chiropractor. People should not assume that their pain comes from the same problem as someone else. For example, some might think that because their neighbor had similar symptoms to them and thus assume what helped their neighbor will help them, too. Every individual is unique and different from the person and so are the health conditions they suffer and the treatments they might require.

Chiropractic doctors receive extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue injuries and the abnormalities that are common to the spine, the extremities and rest of body. You can rest assured that if you are suffering from back or neck problems, extremity problems, or other ailments Chiropractic can provide you with the effective relief of symptoms that you deserve. If the Doctor of Chiropractic finds that your condition is outside of the Chiropractic scope of care or would be more appropriately managed by another health care specialist, he will promptly make the necessary referral.

Are Chiropractic Treatments Safe?

Chiropractic have been proven treatments to be extremely safe for individuals of all ages – from infants to those 100 year olds and over. Chiropractic treatments are safe because only natural and noninvasive methods of care are used. Research consistently reveals that Chiropractic care is among the safest mode of care available and is literally light years ahead of traditional medical care in terms of being safe and effective.

Do Chiropractic Adjustments Hurt?

The vast majority of Chiropractic patients feel very little or no discomfort while being treated by an experienced Chiropractor. Some people arrive for treatment in so much pain that they find it difficult to do anything without causing some discomfort. In these situations, skilled Chiropractors use low force Chiropractic techniques combined with other modalities to relieve the pain and discomfort.

How Long Will My Chiropractic Treatment Take?

While treatment plan lengths vary from person to person and depending on the severity of the condition, there are a few guidelines to help you know what to expect.

If newer injuries are treated quickly and appropriately, they tend to respond more quickly to treatment and will require fewer visits, assuming that major tissue injury has not occurred. Many injuries that are caught early can be effectively treated in as little as 3 to 4 visits.

Conditions and injuries that have been present for more than 3 months, as well as recurring conditions, tend to be more stubborn and take longer to treat correctly. Resolution of the condition may require 12 visits or more.

The only way to accurately determine how long your Chiropractic treatment will take is to schedule an examination and consultation with Dr. Jenkins.

For those who think they can just wait and see if the problem will “go away” on it’s own, you should understand that the longer the you have been dealing with the condition, the longer it will take to treat and resolve the issue.

How Much Will My Chiropractic Care Cost?

Chiropractic treatment costs vary greatly and will depend on the number of treatments required to effectively treat your condition you are suffering from. A number of research studies have shown that Chiropractic care is extremely cost effective when compared to other “medical” forms of care for similar conditions.

According to the “Manga Report” published in 1993, “There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low-back pain was transferred from physicians to chiropractors. Users of chiropractic care have substantially lower health care costs, especially inpatient costs, than those who use medical care only.”

What do Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong Have in Common?

All of these professional athletes, and countless more, utilize Chiropractic care to help them achieve the highest level of performance. Not many people rely on their bodies functioning at their peak more than professional athletes. Because of this, elite athletes are very selective with their healthcare needs. The fact that many top athletes rely on chiropractic treatment underscores the benefits that can be provided by skilled and experienced chiropractor.

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal Decompression Therapy is non-surgical spinal disc rehabilitation system that uses an FDA cleared medical technology device. This device gently stretches the spine and allows the discs in the spine to decompress. This state-of-the-art technique of spinal decompression therapy relieves the “load” on the spine through distraction and positioning, and this therapeutic technique has been proven in the ability to gently separate the vertebrae. This slight separation creates a vacuum within the discs that are targeted through treatment. This “vacuum effect” is also often referred to as negative intradiscal pressure.

The negative pressure created can then lead to the retraction of the bulging or herniated disc allowing it to recede back into the inside of the disc, and moving it off the nerve root, thecal sac, or both. This movement happens only microscopically each time, but over the course of four to six weeks of treatment, the results are quite dramatic and most patients experience a significant reduction in pain.

The cycles of decompression and partial relaxation that occur through Spinal Decompression Therapy during a series of visits helps to promote the diffusion of oxygen, water, and nutrient-rich fluids from the outside of the discs into the inside of the discs. These important components and nutrients allow the torn, inflamed, bulging or degenerating disc fibers to begin to heal.
